    Luther lived an interesting life in interesting times—where to a significant degree those times were made interesting by his life’s impact upon them. This impact began with the publication of his Ninety-Five Theses on 31 October , in which as a young professor at Wittenberg he attacked the Church’s doctrine of indulgences as falling short of a true Biblical understanding of penance; this was then followed by various further disputations and disputes as well as published works that defended his increasingly radical position, leading to his excommunication in and his famously defiant appearance at the Diet of Worms. Managing to escape capture under the protection of Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony, and after a period of seclusion at Wartburg castle, Luther returned to Wittenberg, where he continued his teaching, writing and translating; married; and engaged with the complex and fraught swirl of forces unleashed by his work at various levels—in theology, in the Church, in politics, and in society at large.     Sam Durant is a North Atlantic artist whose interdisciplinary work engages a variety of social, political, and cultural issues. His methodology is research based but with an emphasis on social engagement, often working with communities and groups in collaborative and performative formations. He has done major public art projects, Labyrinth () in Philadelphia which addressed mass incarceration and The Meeting House () in Concord, MA that took up the subject of race in colonial and contemporary New England. His most recent public work Untitled (drone) was installed on the High Line Plinth in New York from and raised the issues of drone warfare and surveillance.

    Growing up near Boston, MA in the ’s he experienced anti-war and civil rights demonstrations and the attempted desegregation of the Boston school system. Exposure to an educational culture emphasizing democratic ideals, racial equality and social justice created the foundation for Durant’s artistic perspective. Often taking up forgotten histories, his works make connections with present and ongoing social and cultural issues.
