Nitin Baid draws from childhood for Chashma: ‘Didn’t tell anyone I couldn’t see the blackboard’

Director Nitin Baid says he borrowed from his childhood to make Chashma that explores themes of self-acceptance and identity through the story of a kid with impaired vision

In Nitin Baid’s Chashma, we open ourselves to the poignant story of 11-year-old Supriyo, who faces challenges at school due to his poor vision. TheKonkona Sen Sharma, Shishir Sharma and Ayan Khan-starrer, which will première at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival on October 22, explores Supriyo’s journey towards self-acceptance. Baid admits that for the short film, he drew from his own life. “Personal is always universal,” he smiles.

A private viewing of a film?

That sounds exclusive and enticing… made one feel like a star. But it was just a start — a start to showcase what a small group of talented individuals can do.

The idea for the fourteen-and-a-half-minute film brewed over a cup of coffee where writer Tanuj Khosla shared his story with actress Renita Kapoor. Kapoor said she always wanted to play a dark character and the story offered that.

Set in an indeterminate interior, in this case Kapoor’s house in Singapore, the film mapped the life of a stand-up comedian couple in India (and there is no way to figure out where the locale is if it is all within a room).
