If you’re a young gay boy growing up on a farm in Paris, Texas, and you fall in love with a VHS tape of “Summer Stock,” a 1950 movie musical starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, and you have a set of pipes that can rock Carnegie Hall and an aunt Ninnie who tells you to sing what you love, then it’s almost inevitable that you’re going to follow that yellow brick road forever.
And so Seth Sikes has. Although he sings Judy Garland’s songs and uses her lush arrangements, what he does is neither an impersonation nor an imitation of her. He has fashioned his obsession with Garland into something else, a very personal art form.
In his July show at the Crown & Anchor, Sikes walked onstage in a short blazer and jeans as himself — an engaging young talent with a thousand-watt smile. Then he began singing “From This Moment On,” and Judy, magically, was in the room.
He distills her essence. Both Garland and Sikes have the same onstage presence of childlike wonderment and innocence. They both have that uncanny way of making their loneliness a shared experience.
