The Beauty Queen of Leenane completes Third Rail’s staging of Martin McDonagh’s Leenane Trilogy, following The Lonesome West and A Skull in Connemara. Maureen Folan is living in her tiny cottage in the village of Leenane, caring for her aging mother, Mag, a woman of many demands and minimal charms. She aches to leave her life of tedium, not to mention her manipulative mother, and opportunity knocks with the appearance of Pato Dooley. So begins a darkly hilarious series of events, leading to a stunning and surprising climax that only Martin McDonagh could have conceived.

In Leenane, in the Connemara region of Ireland, silver strands of rain fall against a black sky. Later, winds will howl and dogs will bark into an empty night. Brought to the stage by Third Rail Repertory Theatre, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" is the third and final play of Martin McDonagh's Leenane Trilogy, which began with "The Lonesome West" and continued with "A Skull in Connemara." Haunting, cruel and intense, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" emerges from a relentless landscape.
Seemingly protected from the battering storm, inside the cottage of Maureen Folan (Maureen Porter) and her elderly mother, Mag (Jayne Taini), there's a rocking chair and an electric tea kettle, but things are far from cozy. Thanks to props master Drew Dannhorn, we understand something about these characters right away.
