Building on his application of complex system dynamics to Earth System science, Schellnhuber has pushed the boundaries of interdisciplinarity by extending his work into the broad sustainability arena, becoming a pioneer in bringing a strongly quantitative physics and applied mathematics background to bear on more normative and very complex questions surrounding sustainable development at the planetary level.
His outstanding contributions to “Earth System science for sustainability” at the national and international level have solidified Schellnhuber’s position as a world leader in the field. He is a member of the board of the prestigious Dahlem Conferences, which have made major contributions to the Earth System science – sustainability link. Beyond this higher level role, he has also been on the organising committee himself for key Dahlem Conferences. A good example is the conference on “ Earth System Analysis in the Anthropocene”, which contributed important insights into the concept of the Anthropocene, a new geological epoch in Earth history, and its connection to the growing sustainability agenda.

Hans Joachim Schellnhuber founded the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in and has been its director ever since. He holds a chair in theoretical physics at Potsdam University and is an external professor at the Santa Fe Institute (USA). From to , he also served as research director of the Tyndall Centre in the UK and became a visiting professor at Oxford University thereafter.
Schellnhuber is currently chair of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), governing board chair of the Climate-KIC of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), and chair of the standing committee on climate, energy, and environment of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina). He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the Leopoldina, the Max Planck Society, and several other academies. He received the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (), the German Environment Prize (), and the Volvo Environment Prize ().
